Das ehemalige Bauerndorf liegt im Tal zwischen den Tafeljurabergen Altenberg (im Südosten), Limperg (im Südwesten), Horn (im Westen) und Homberg (im Nordwesten). Wie die meisten Dörfer im Fricktal ist Wittnau ein Strassendorf. Die Häuser des alten Dorfkerns liegen zum grössten Teil entlang der Hauptstrasse und dies auf einer Länge von rund 1,5 km. Wittnau hat eine bewegte und interessante Vergangenheit. Hochkarätige archäologische Funde beweisen, dass das heutige Gemeindegebiet schon in urgeschichtlicher und römischer Zeit besiedelt war. Heimarbeit war im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert für viele Wittnauer Familien ein wichtiger Nebenerwerb. In vielen Stuben ratterte ein Bandwebstuhl. In Wittnau gab es gar eine Posamenterschule, die eine Berufsausbildung für Bandweber anbot. Die Homepage «Wittnau-einst» gibt einen Einblick in die vielfältige Vergangenheit des Fricktaler Dorfes.
