We are very keen for starting this new project and hope to hear from you soon!   Discover More Virtual Insel Simulation Lab Freiburgstrasse 16C CH, 3010 Bern  +41 31 632 24 42 Opening hours Mon – Fri 08:00-17:00 Sat – Sun Closed We are VISL Our Mission At VISL we are dedicated to the use of these modern techniques in the field of medical education, further education and training.  In addition to the practical development of VR simulation scenarios with the help of our partner companies, we also focus on research on and with VR in the field of medical teaching and on its transfer into medical practice. Virtual Reality Virtual Reality (VR) creates an immersive simulated environment using software and a head-mounted device (HMD).  VR, more than any other technology that has ever existed, offers the unique opportunity to make the user believe they are in a different environment. Debriefing and auto-generated feedback ensure a lasting learning experience.  AR and MR Augmented Reality (AR) offers the possibility of projecting virtual information and structures over physical objects to enhance or change the real environment. Mixed Reality (MR) is the fusion of real and virtual worlds to create new environments and visualisations in which physical and digital objects coexist and interact in real time. Team Thomas Sauter Co-Founder Thomas Sauter Co-Founder Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Sauter, MME is Head Physician at the University Emergency Centre of the Inselspital and Endowed Professor of Telenotfall Medicine at the University of Bern and heads eEmergency Medicine, the Department of Telenotfall Medicine and eHealth at the University Emergency Centre. For years, he has been working both scientifically and in practical application on the opportunities and risks of the digitalisation of emergency medicine, especially in the area of telemedical applications and virtual reality in the clinic as well as in education and training. Juliane Kämmer Team expert Juliane Kämmer Team expert Dr. Juliane Kämmer, Dipl.-Psych., is a Senior Researcher at the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Bern, where she co-leads the Diagnostic Quality Lab. In 2013, she completed her doctorate in psychology at the Humboldt University in Berlin and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development. She then researched and taught as a Research Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, the FernUniversität in Hagen, Charité-Universitätsmedizin and as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the University of Bern. In her research on team decisions under uncertainty and diagnostic quality, she combines theories and methods from psychology, cognitive science and medical education research. Her research provides insights that aim to lead to better team decisions, such as in the form of better medical diagnoses. In our team, she leads the project «Team Training and Team Evaluation», which is part of the EU-funded MED1stMR project. Andrea Neher PhD Student Andrea Neher PhD Student Upon completing her master’s degree in nursing science, Andrea Neher embarked on a professional journey, starting as a research associate and then as an APN (CNS) in a hospital setting. Through these experiences, she gained invaluable insights and sharpened her ability to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and its practical application in clinical settings. She developed a profound understanding of the intricacies of translating complex theoretical concepts into tangible practices, making her a valuable asset to the nursing community. Andrea is currently involved in a project that focuses on using virtual reality as an assessment tool in medical education. Nicola Travaglini Technical Nicola Travaglini Technical Nicola Travaglini is an e-coach at the ILUB of the University of Bern. He supports the senior physicians in the technical implementation and realisation. Fabienne Gschwind Doctoral Candidate Tanja Birrenbach Co-Founder Tanja Birrenbach Co-Founder PD Dr. med. Tanja Birrenbach, MME, is a senior physician at the University Emergency Centre of Inselspital. As part of a postgraduate programme, she was awarded a Master in Medical Education (MME) from the Universities of Bern and Illinois at Chicago. She has long been involved in education and training in emergency medicine, including simulation-based training. She leads the Virtual Reality Simulation group in the Department of Digital Emergency Medicine at the University Emergency Centre of Inselspital. Her research focusses on the opportunities of medical extended reality applications for education and training as well as emergency clinical care. Wolf Hautz Co-Worker Wolf Hautz Co-Worker Prof. Dr. med. Wolf Hautz, MME, is a head physician at the University Emergency Centre. His research focuses on understanding decision-making in acute medicine and specifically on research to avoid diagnostic errors. Laura Moens PhD Student Laura Moens PhD Student Laura Moens started her academic journey in social psychology at Tilburg University, the Netherlands. Her passion for leveraging technology to tackle societal challenges led her to pursue a second master’s degree in engineering psychology. After graduating, she worked for 3 years as a Human Factors consultant in Italy where she was involved in EU-funded projects about human-centred innovation in safety-critical domains such as aviation, manufacturing, crisis management, and healthcare. Laura now contributes her expertise to improving performance in clinical teams. More specifically, her PhD project “tools4teams” aims to develop an innovative XR tool for the assessment and improvement of socio-cognitive skills within acute care teams. Socio-cognitive factors such as Situation Awareness, are regarded to be important determinants of patient safety and quality of care, particularly in acute care. Florian Bühlmann Doctoral Candidate Thomas Sauter Co-Founder Thomas Sauter Co-Founder Prof. Dr. med.
